Our Holy and Eternal God
(from the April 2005 issue of The Almond Branch of CMI)

"For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." Isaiah 57:15 (NKJ)

God is eternal.  He lives in eternity.  He sees things from His eternal perspective.  He has a plan for His creation formulated in eternity, before He ever made the world.  He is holy.  His plan and His ways and His nature are far above those of men and angels and any created being.  He sees the end from the beginning.  At the beginning of time, when He made the world, He saw the end of things.  He knew we would sin, but He also knew His plan of redemption.  He is holy.  He is eternal.  He will reward of every good act and punish every evil act.

Jesus lived a completely good life, but He was punished for our bad behavior.  In Christ we can receive the blessings of His good actions.  In Christ our evil acts have been punished.  We need not, like the men outside of Christ or like the devil and his angels, fear the judgments and wrath of God.  Because God’s judgments are not always brought forth immediately, the world does not understand or seek them.   BUT because God is eternal, these rewards and punishments will come about.  They will come to us as we receive His eternal ways and walk in His holiness.  He is holy.  He is eternal.

God invites us to live in His holiness.  He provides us with the ability to partake of His holy nature through the work of His Son Jesus Christ.  He is holy.  The Bible says that He chose us, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blame before Him in love in Christ (Ephesians 1:4).  He is working all things in our lives for His eternal purpose.

The passage from Isaiah, quoted above, says that God dwells in the high and holy place with us to revive our hearts.  We need to see things from God’s perspective.  We can be weighed down with fear, guilt, shame, worries, and the like.  God invites us to live above our circumstances, to see things from His perspective, and to draw life and wisdom and strength from Him.  He is holy.  He does not say to live apart from our circumstances, to pretend that things are OK when we are experiencing difficulties.  Rather He says to cast our cares on Him, to live in Him, and to see things from His heavenly and eternal perspective.  He says that we should let Him live in us so that He can speak to us and impart His life, wisdom and power into our very being as we live on this earth.  God is holy.

God lives in every moment with an eternal perspective.  He is the Eternal I AM.  He brings His eternal desires and nature into every moment.  He is not living in the past, regretting our past mistakes.  He is not living in the future, hoping that things will change.  Rather He lives in the very moment with His eternal perspective.  He knows things will change, because He has an eternal plan.  He changes things by bringing His eternal plan into the very moment we live in.  He is holy.

The passage from Isaiah says it takes a contrite and humble spirit to live with God in His high and holy place.  God often lets us experience difficulties so He can free us of our human desire to live for ourselves, trusting in our own abilities.  God knows that there is evil in the world that would like to destroy us--or at the very least keep us from living in the reality of being in God’s presence and having His life in us.  Jesus said, “Do not fear; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)   He, as a human being, lived a life in communion with the will and purposes of His Father.  He focused on the heavenly presence of His Father.  He drew strength from the power of the Spirit of God, Who lived within Him.  He had a humble spirit.  Now He can bring us into His life so we too can live humbly before God.  God is holy.  Jesus is holy.  We are called to be holy.  We can be holy in Christ.  That is our eternal destiny.

David understood these things.  He would sit in God’s tabernacle, focusing on Him, worshipping Him, listening to Him, receiving instruction from Him, and seeing things from God’s perspective.  He wrote:

“One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.  For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle he shall hide me; he shall set me high upon a rock.
And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD.” (Psalm 27:4-6 NKJ)

We can do what God wants us to do as we become what God wants us to become.  As we sit before Him like David and fix our eyes on Him, we will be lifted up above our circumstances and receive God’s plan and purpose and wisdom to deal with every event in life.  We will know that God is holy and dwells in eternity.  His holy and eternal life will then be our focus and will become a part of our life.  We will be holy and eternal with His holy and eternal life.  Hallelujah!
