Digests A Thought for the Week--Healing in Christ Wednesday, February 14, 2007 "But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings;" (Malachi 4:2 NKJ) When Jesus came, He told the people to repent, for the kingdom of God was here; God was acting on man’s behalf. God had now come to take away the sins of men. He came to take their sin, their sorrows, and their griefs upon Himself. Jesus came to earth and preached the good news. John the Baptist recognized that Jesus was the promised Messiah, the sacrificial Lamb that Isaiah had spoken about. When Jesus began to preach His gospel of repentance, John the Baptist recognized Him. The Bible says, "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’" (John 1:29) Jesus is the Lamb of God, spoken of by Isaiah hundreds of years before He came, who takes away the sins of the world. The Gospel of the kingdom means that my sins can be removed. But there is more. The prophet Isaiah also writes of this Lamb of God, "Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:4-5). Jesus would not only take away our sins, He would also bear our griefs and our sorrows. Because of sin we have been separated from God. Others sin against us and abuse us with words and actions. We have deep-seated griefs and sorrows that break our spirits, weigh us down with guilt and shame, and bring deep sorrow into our spiritual and emotional being. These sorrows and griefs bring about sickness into our bodies. Our immune systems can attack our own flesh because of self-hatred we carry. We become inflicted with many diseases and infirmities. The Bible says: "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression" (Proverbs 12:25), "…a broken spirit dries the bones" (Proverbs 17:22), "Hope deferred makes the heart sick" (Proverbs 13:12), and "…envy is rottenness to the bones" (Proverbs 14:30). The healing ministry of Jesus was directly related to His being the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world. The evangelist Matthew writes: "When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: ‘He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses’" (Matthew 8:16-17). The Holy Spirit, writing through Matthew, states that Jesus healed the sick so that what Isaiah had spoken of Him would be fulfilled. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sorrows and the griefs of the world. These were the mental, spiritual and emotional results of sin, which can cause sickness. Jesus comes to forgive and remove sins and to heal. Praise God! Father, we rejoice that You want to forgive our sins, to remove our sins, to impart Your life into us and to heal us. Help us to receive and live in all You have for us. Amen. BACK TO TOP |
