Daily Prayer
Digests A Thought for the Week Uniting with God through Christ Wednesday, March 26, 2008 "I and My Father are one." (John 10:30 NKJ) Jesus said that He was fully united with His Father. He made the statement in the above verse when the Jewish leaders asked Him to clearly declare to them whether He was the Christ, the Messiah they had been looking for. Jesus explained to them that the miracles and other signs that He did, gave evidence to the truth that He was the Messiah. He then stated the truth that He and His Father were one. Jesus told the people He did what He saw His Father doing--He lived in the will of God. He loved God’s will. He came to do the will of His Father. God loves doing His own will; as God, He knows that there is no other being with a will better than His own. Jesus also knew that. As a human He had His own will, but He surrendered His will to that of His Father. He went where His Father told Him to go and spoke what His Father gave Him to speak; He and His Father were one. Jesus told the disciples that when they saw Him, they saw His Father. The Bible records the following conversation Jesus had with Phillip, one of His disciples: "Philip said to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves’" (John 14:8-11 NKJ). Jesus loved being one with His Father. He loved the will of God, and He loves us. He wants us to become one with Him, as He is one with His Father. He desires that we too love and do God’s will as He did. He wants us to do the works of God as He did, so that others will know we are one with God. He desires that we speak the words of God as He did, so we too can be one with God as He is. Jesus said, "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me" (John 17:22, 23 NKJ). Being united with God is a humanly impossible task. Being united with God is a concept that is humanly impossible to grasp or believe in. However, Jesus lived in that unity, and now He wants this for us. We can let Him work this in us. This will be God’s ultimate witness to the world--that His people are fully united with Him. Paul says, "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1Thessalonians 5:23 NKJ). Even so, Come Lord Jesus! Father, we rejoice in You and in Your perfection and Your beauty. Help us to grasp and believe in Your desire for us to be united with You as Jesus was, through His life in us and by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Amen. BACK TO TOP |
