Thought for the
Day Digests Forgiveness and Freedom through the Blood Monday, August 4, 2008 "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36 NKJ) When God created Adam He told him not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He told Adam and Eve of His judgment of sin on disobedient people, saying, "Of every tree of the garden thou may freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eat thereof thou shalt surely die" (Genesis 2:16-17 KJV). Jesus said, "Whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin" (John 8:34). When we sin, we become slaves to sin and are unable to get ourselves out of its grasp. Since God has decreed that the wages of sin is death, the longer we continue in sin, the worse our sinful patterns become. Sin leads to death--separation from God. More sin leads to further separation from God. As our patterns of sin get worse and worse, we become dead to the ways of God. We become separated from God, held captive by sin. Our sinful ways not only separate us from God’s presence, they also separate us from His blessings. When we continue in sin we experience fear, lack of provision, sickness, pain, anxiety, loneliness, hopelessness and other harmful things. Because we have lost the knowledge of God and the experience of His blessings, fears and anxieties set in. When I was addicted to drunkenness, I was in bondage to the effects of alcohol; I couldn’t stop my excessive drinking. Instead of drinking moderately, I was consumed by the desire for more. When I tried to stop, the drunkenness only got worse. I found myself saying with Paul, "...the good that I would I do not and the evil that I would not that I do" (Romans 7:19). I was experiencing God’s judgment of sin. But God showed me His way to come out of my sinfulness through the power of the blood of Jesus, and through His Holy Spirit. The Bible says: "...be not drunk with wine, but be filled with the Holy Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18 KJV). Now, through His blood, He gives me the right to live under the New Covenant. In this Covenant, God promises to put His ways and His Spirit into me; thus I will have the desire and the power to live in His will. Under the New Covenant, God promises to bless me. He promises to show me my sin so that I can confess it and then become free from its hold on me. He promises to put His ways in me so that I want to obey Him. He promises to put His Spirit into me so that I have the power to obey Him and then to be blessed by Him. All this is possible through the blood of Jesus. This is how and why I have been able to receive deliverance from the sinful addiction and bondage of drunkenness. I have been redeemed by Christ. We can be freed through the blood of Christ and the Word of God and through Jesus living in us. Father, we thank You for Your provision for us so that we can be forgiven and live for You. Help us to cry out to You and to receive Your Life. Amen. BACK TO TOP |
